Q. What are the different grades of stainless steel finishes?

Stainless Steel Finishes are usually designated by a system of numbers. All those numbers are  interpreted in several ways, but below is how Waters Industrial Supply interprets some of the numbers. (In any circumstance, one should always consult with their customer as to how and what they perceive as the final SS finish as over the past years SS finishes have been perceived differently).

#0    Is a mill finish, scaley and rough. Typically found on plate type stainless steel.

#2B  Is typically a plain uniform finish. No oxidation or scaling and no directional grain. Slightly resembles the  orbital finish produced by a random orbital sander using a medium grit abrasive. Has no directional grain. RA of 8

#3    Is a plain and uniform finish just as the 2B. Resembles a finish produced by a random orbital sander with a fine grit abrasive. Has no directional grain.

#4   Typically has a directional grain finish obtained by using a 150 grit abrasive and leaving a pit-free finish. The Ra range is typically in the 24-32 RA range. The #4 finish is a common finish used in the dairy industry. (RA 32)

#6  The number 6 is a number 4 finish followed with an additional step produced by a rotating cloth mop loaded with a fine abrasive paste. The rotating mop finish typically lowers the Ra finish 18-22 Ra.

#7 Is a buffed finish that has a mirror type relfectiveness. The Ra’s are generally between 5-10.

#8 Is a number 7 finish with an additional buffing step lowering the Ra’s to 2-4  leaving a mirrored finish.
